Yazoo – Don’t Go (Re-Mixes). 12 inch single.
Don’t Go was the second single from Yazoo’s debut album Upstairs at Eric’s, released in 1982 and now widely regarded as a synth-pop classic.
After quitting Depeche Mode, songwriter and synth wizard Vince Clarke went on to form Yazoo with singer and fellow Basildon native, Alison Moyet.
Yazoo or Yaz as they were marketed in America for legal reasons, were only active for a very short time in the early eighties. However, in little over a year they managed to release two albums and four UK singles, with all but one of the singles peaking at number 3 or higher in their respective charts.
Vince Clarke put the skills he had honed in Depeche Mode to full use on Don’t Go, a synthesizer driven track that’s machine based sound is wonderfully offset by Alison Moyet’s powerful, bluesy vocals, which were an unusual feature in synth-pop of that period.
The 12 inch remix extends Don’t Go with breakdowns and added effects, while the re-remix strips out the vocals turning it into more or less an 80s electro track. Since then, Don’t Go has undergone further remixes and been sampled many times by other artists over the years.
Also included on the single is the Alison Moyet written track, Winter Kills, which brings a completely different vibe to the listener, mellowing things right down and showing off another side to her vocal abilities.
