Suicide Sal was the second solo album by Glaswegian singer-songwriter Maggie Bell.
After her stint as vocalist with blues rock group Stone The Crows ended, Maggie Bell embarked on a solo career. She released her debut album ‘Queen Of The Night’ before signing for Led Zeppelin’s newly formed record label Swan Song.
Suicide Sal was her only album released on Swan Song and featured guitar solos from Jimmy Page on the tracks ‘If You Don’t Know’and ‘Comin’ On Strong’. Also on the album is a cover of Free’s ‘Wishing Well’ and a bluesy version of The Beatles’ ‘I Saw Him Standing There’.
With her gravely vocals Maggie Bell is often likened to a Scottish Janis Joplin, and while that’s quite a compliment, she’s also an amazing singer in her own right.
Those vocals, great songs and the backing of some legendary musicians include Jimmy Page, make Suicide Sal an LP every blues / rock aficionado should have in their record collection.
